Bed clothes are made from many different types of fabrics. All these fabrics will feel different so it comes down to personal preference which fabric a person prefers. How a certain fabric feels is one of the most important factors people use in choosing a set of bedclothes.
COTTON FABRICS are one of the most popular fabrics used to make bedclothes. Cotton is smooth, long-lasting, and easily maintained. You can come across many types of cotton; the most common variants are Egyptian, Pima, upland, Supima®, and MicroCotton®. These fibers are usually woven into fabric by means of the most common methods: plain weaves, twill weaves, and satin weaves (including jacquard and dobby).
Poplin is a popular cotton fabric (also includes cotton polyester blended) that is woven with high-count and high-density yarn in a plain weave texture. Because its structure is plain weave, according to the features of plain weave, the warp and weft points are distributed alternately, and there will not be a long floating line. This also results in its relatively compact structure, the appearance of the surface is similar to silk, and the performance in all aspects is also very similar.
The fabrics called “poplin” should meet three conditions:
1) warp and weft yarn count must be more than 40s;
2) warp density must be more than 100 threads/inch;
3) warp density must be more than 20 threads at least than the weft density.
So, if the warp and weft yarn count are less than 40s, or warp density is less than 100 threads/inch, the plain-woven cotton fabrics are usually called “plain cloth” or “fine cloth”, not called “poplin”. General poplins usually have more than 170 threads/inch density; High-density poplins have more than 200 threads/inch, and down-proof poplins have more than 230 threads/inch.
Main uses and features of cotton poplin fabrics
Cotton plain fabrics are mainly used for autumn and winter clothing linings and pockets, poplins are mainly used for clothing of all kinds and underwear, as well as homewares such as bedding, bed sheets, pillowcase, bedspreads, bed covers, duvet covers, quilts, mattress cover, etc.
Other Fabrics for Bed Clothes
FLAX: Flax is a naturally occurring, sustainable fiber used to make linen fabric. The popularity of linen in bedding has grown significantly in recent years to the strength and durability of the fabric, as well as its ability to keep you cool at night. Unlike cotton sheets, linen does not have a smooth surface, but rather a subtle texture, making it most commonly used for top-of-bed articles, such as Duvets and Shams. However, with washing, the fabric grows softer and more relaxed.
SILK: Made from fiber produced by silkworms for cocoons, silk is considered one of the most elegant and opulent fabrics due to its lustrous texture. Despite needing delicate care, silk fibers are robust and durable. The fabric also results in some attractive properties, such as moisture retention for your skin and resistance to dust mites, allergens, and bacteria.

POLYCOTTON: As the name suggests, polycotton is a fabric that is made from a blend of polyester and cotton. It is used by those wanting an easy-care, more affordable option. The polyester in the fabric results in less wrinkling during laundering, and greater resistance to repeated washing. Therefore, it’s a great option for those with practicality in mind!
